THE STORY AND TEAM BEHIND AVAZ

Avaz builds communication accessibility tools that help individuals with speech and language disabilities communicate with confidence

At Avaz, we believe every person deserves a way to express themselves, connect with others, learn, participate, and be understood.

For millions of children and adults with complex communication needs, communication is often limited not by ability but by access, support systems, and overwhelming complexity.

We exist to change that.

Avaz builds communication accessibility tools that help individuals with speech and language disabilities communicate with confidence across homes, schools, clinics, and everyday life.

Today, Avaz supports users, families, therapists, educators, and communication partners across the world through multilingual AAC (Augmentative and Alternative Communication) solutions designed to be intuitive, adaptable, and accessible.

Where Avaz began

Between 2005 and 2009, a small group of innovators from the Indian Institute of Technology Madras began exploring a difficult question:

Why was AAC still inaccessible for so many families in India?

Working closely with special educators, therapists, and children with communication disabilities, the team experimented with multiple approaches before developing one of India’s first AAC tablet systems, Avaz, meaning “voice” in Hindi.

The product quickly gained adoption across autism and cerebral palsy intervention settings and went on to receive the President of India’s National Award for Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities.

Soon after, with the rise of tablets and mobile computing, Avaz evolved into an app-based AAC platform available on Android and iPad, helping expand access to communication support across India and internationally.

Avaz was also recognized globally for innovation, including recognition by MIT Technology Review as part of the MIT TR35 innovators list.

Beyond AAC software

Over the years, one insight became increasingly clear: Communication success depends on far more than just software.

Families often face:

  • overwhelming setup complexity,
  • lack of AAC guidance,
  • inconsistent support systems,
  • and difficulty building communication habits in everyday life.

This is especially true in multilingual and emerging-market environments where structured AAC ecosystems may still be developing. That realization continues to shape how we build.

Today, Avaz is evolving beyond being only an AAC app. We are building systems that simplify communication access through:

  • multilingual communication support,
  • caregiver enablement,
  • onboarding and guidance systems,
  • communication partner support,
  • AI-assisted accessibility tools,
  • and experiences designed to reduce cognitive load and accelerate real-world communication success.

Our focus is not on building the most complicated feature set. Our focus is helping more people communicate consistently, confidently, and meaningfully.

Growing within a larger accessibility ecosystem

Avaz is now part of the PRC-Saltillo family, a global leader in AAC and assistive communication solutions.

This partnership expands our ability to support communicators, families, clinicians, and educators across diverse communication needs and geographies, while continuing to build products grounded in accessibility, usability, and real-world communication success.

As part of a broader assistive technology ecosystem, Avaz continues to focus on what has always driven us: creating communication tools that are intuitive, inclusive, multilingual, and accessible to the people who need them most.
